Significant possibly record rainfall on the way this weekend!

Current models indicate rainfall amounts of up to 160mm falling in parts of Alberta over the weekend, The bulk of it falling in a 24 hour period. Imbedded thunderstorms could drive localized amounts even higher. A note that these forecast amounts exceed all time single day records for many of the effected areas. Also with much of the record mountain snow pack yet to melt there is a possible risk of river flooding of many major rivers in west central Alberta. Stay tuned for updates

Happy Holidays and New Year 2012

2011 draws to a close with best hopes for 2012. To round off the year here is my annual “best of lightning”

So far the winter season has been a dud. 6C warmer than average and hardly any snow, this may have a negative effect on the 2012 season if we come into spring and summer with drought conditions. But never worry, here in Alberta not even a mega drought can stop the supercells!

Surprise WX

A full month after the season stopped abruptly the storms once again rolled off the foothills. Sept 15 failed to see the storms reach too far east though one cell south of Edson started to look like a full blown severe summer storm. Sept 16th saw the storms reach farther east hitting areas around and south of Wetaskiwin, I recorded several loud thunderclaps as well as some high winds. The storms than seemed to die out along highway #21, not bad for the middle of September.

Looking ahead it looks like another “heat wave” may be in store and may last into October though not as hot as the last burst of warmth. Should still see values as high as 27C
